The Era of Refractive Cataract Surgery

See clearly

Cataract surgery has advanced tremendously over the years. Prior to the 1990s, cataract surgery was done when patients were severely debilitated as cataract surgery required hospitalization. Since then cataract surgery has turned into an outpatient surgery that takes less than ten minutes for the most skilled surgeons. Patients are able to get the immediate benefits of cataract surgery soon after surgery rather than having to wait weeks for vision to clear.

In addition to reducing the cloudy vision, the secondary goal of modern cataract surgery is to reduce the need for glasses or contact lenses. With advancements in intraocular lens design, patients now have many options to reduce their need for glasses for distance or for reading.

Dr. Daniel Choi is a nationally recognized expert in cataract surgery and speaks on the modern options for premium surgery in his latest Experts Insight Podcast for the American Academy of Ophthalmology.
