Dr. Choi is an expert cataract, refractive, and corneal surgeon.

Dr. Choi's expertise on refractive surgery (surgery to eliminate glasses) and corneal surgery allows him to have the best possible cataract surgery outcomes. The cornea is the front clear structure of the eye and is important in vision. Understanding more than the basic cataract surgeon allows Dr. Choi to handle more challenging cataract surgeries and help patients choose the best intraocular lens for their eye. From multifocal, toric, or monofocal intraocular lenses, Dr. Choi can match the correct intraocular lens for each patient's vision requirements and health of the eye.

Often times Dr. Choi gets referred patients who have had cataract surgery complications elsewhere and are in desperate need for a second surgery (often times a corneal transplant) to rescue their vision. Dr. Choi takes consults from numerous other cataract and corneal surgeons locally in Hawaii and throughout the United States. Included here is an example of a patient who was suffering from blindess after an complicated surgery with an outside surgeon. Dr. Choi completed a corneal transplant to rescue this patients vision. The patient went from hand motion vision (barely seeing a hand moving) to 20/60 vision.

Dr. Choi provides lectures to other surgeons as part of the American Academy of Ophthalmology to help surgeons acquire the skills they need to prevent these types of complications. Dr. Choi has one of the lowest cataract surgery complication rates in all of Hawaii and is often referred cataracts from other cataract surgeons when they are too difficult.
